Director of Instruction

Mr. Tim Overstreet began his current role as Director of Instruction in July 2014. He assumed additional responsibilities in July 2016, to include the direct supervision and evaluation of seven Bedford County principals. Additionally, Mr. Overstreet is a certified trainer for A Framework for Understanding Poverty, inspired by Dr. Ruby Payne’s work, and a Thinking Maps: Write from the Beginning trainer for Bedford County Public Schools.

Mr. Overstreet has served as an administrator for ten of his twenty-three years with Bedford County Public Schools.  Prior to his appointment as Director of Instruction, he worked as a school administrator in two of the three school zones in Bedford County.  Mr. Overstreet served as principal of Liberty High School from 2012 – 2014, principal of Staunton River Middle School from 2011 – 2012, and assistant principal of Liberty High School from 2007 – 2010.  He also served as the BCPS Supervisor of Mathematics, Science, and Gifted Education from 2010 – 2011.  In 2013, Mr. Overstreet was named “Student Council Association Principal of the Year” for Virginia.

Mr. Overstreet taught Chemistry, Advanced Chemistry, Chemistry II, and Science Research at Liberty High School from 1994 – 2007. He also served as a JV Baseball Coach, National Honor Society Advisor, Academic Team Coach, and Senior Class sponsor during those years.  Mr. Overstreet received the “Dedication to Quality Education” award from the Central Virginia Governor’s School for Science and Technology for the 1996 – 1997 school year.  In 2005, he was named Liberty High School “Teacher of the Year.”

Mr. Overstreet earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Roanoke College in 1993 and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Lynchburg College in 2007.  He completed a cognate of literacy classes, earning a Literacy Certificate, through Lynchburg College prior to starting his doctoral coursework.

Mr. Overstreet grew up on a family farm in Franklin County where he continues to raise Registered Angus cattle in his spare time.  However, he has resided in Bedford County for the past 18 years.  He is married to Heather Overstreet, a high school mathematics teacher with Franklin County Public Schools.  They have three children, Quinn, Claire, and Hannah, who attend schools in the Staunton River zone.  

Mr. Overstreet believes in a team leadership philosophy, which is why individuals with diverse backgrounds in education have been selected to serve on the division Instruction Team.  Several of the team members have building level administrative experience.  The Instruction Team includes: Ms. Sarah Danaher, Supervisor of Mathematics; Mr. Todd Reichert, Supervisor of Reading and English; Ms. Dawn Verhoeff, Supervisor of Science, Foreign Language, and Gifted Programs; Mrs. Sherry Wiese, Supervisor of Social Studies and Mentor Programs; Mrs. Cathey Burks, Supervisor of Title I Programs; and Mrs. Melanie Simmons, Supervisor of Grants and Pre-K Programs.  Mr. Overstreet believes that we should be servant leaders, always keeping the best interest of students in mind.
