Personalizing Learning

Virginia's vision for the Virtual School Programs Program (click here for link to pdf) is outlined as such:
"Research increasingly suggests that online learning can be as effective and, in some cases, more effective than traditional classroom learning. This finding, coupled with the increasing availability of newer technologies, has led to a dramatic growth in virtual school programs in recent years. Virtual programs offer increased opportunities, flexibility, and convenience. Along with their tremendous potential to meet the unique needs of students and families, virtual programs must reflect the same characteristics of any effective program. In other words, effective online programs require highly qualified teachers, rigorous and appropriate standards-based curricula, meaningful assessments, engaging resources, adequate support, and effective administration."

Bedford County Public Schools is aligning itself with this vision.
Strategic Plan Bedford County Public Schools:
GOAL:
Prepare students to be successful in college and career fields.

  • Strategy: Create personalized learning experiences for all students.
Through the provider Edgenuity and other computer based learning we offer state-approved courses in blended synchronous and asynchronous environments. Our summer school program is conducted in a hybrid or blended environment, and we are exploring other avenues of success within blended learning.

Qualities fostered by personalized learning:

  • self motivation
  • advanced computer skills
  • higher level thinking skills
  • an understanding of the computer basics of pointing and clicking, saving files, and interacting with electronic media
  • good reading and comprehension skills
  • RECOGNITION that blended classes are not easier but just as challenging where accountability for learning is led by the student, facilitated by the teacher, and supported by the parent/guardian.

How does one learn more about the personalized learning class offerings in their schools? We offer these courses to meet the diverse learning needs of all our students.  Personalized learning affords Bedford County the ability to provide instant remediation and other course offerings based on individual performances where time is not the factor.  Plans are to integrate more classes in the future.  Seek out your school counselor for details.
