Career and Technical Education - Alumni Spotlight

Logan Shorter

Hello, my name is Logan Shorter and I graduated from Jefferson Forest High School in May of 2017. During my junior and senior year I attended Bedford Science and Technology Center (BSTC) where I took Sam Morgan’s Building Construction class. Ever since I can remember, I knew I wanted to go into construction for my career, but I never knew what to fully expect. So, when I first enrolled into BSTC, I wasn’t sure what I got myself into. But having such a good instructor, who had spent most of his life doing what he taught, helped us right from the beginning. In this course we learned many things which included rough carpentry to trim carpentry as well as framing and painting. Not only did we learn the labor side of this field, but we were taught how to estimate prices for current and future jobs. Two things I can say that we learned that were most important were respect for one another and team work. Not only was the construction class focused on these two items, but the whole staff at BSTC implemented these traits. Everyone was so polite and willing to help at a moment’s notice no matter the situation. It almost made it seem like a family-like community. After graduating, I jumped right into the work force going full time with Coleman-Adams Construction Inc. and trying to learn as much as I can. I was able to jump in ahead of the game with the knowledge that I had gained not only about work, but how to carry myself as an adult in the work force. Now, looking back almost a year later from when I graduated, I am thankful for all that Bedford Science and Technology Center taught me and their amazing staff. I know that I would not be where I am today if I hadn’t taken the risk and gone to learn something new. I am grateful and I will continue to use and spread to younger generations what this amazing school has done for me, many others, and our community.
